Variable Speed Electric Fire Pump Controllers
- Designed for use with electric motor driven fire pumps.
- Incorporates a variable frequency drive (VFD) to control the speed of a fire pump for the purpose of limiting system pressure.
- Reduces the mechanical stress on both the motor and the equipment.
- Available in a variety of bypass starting methods.
- Manufactured in accordance with the NFPA 20 standard and UL listed.
Bypass Starting Methods:
- Model VPA – Full voltage Across the Line
- Model VPS – Reduced Voltage Soft Start / Soft Stop
- Model VPR – Reduced Voltage Autotransformer
Model VPU – Automatic Transfer Switch
- Required if normal utility power is not reliable
- Housed in a barriered compartment or in a separate enclosure attached to the fire pump controller
- Listed and Approved for fire pump service
- Equipped with a transfer switch TEST pushbutton

Time delays:
- To override momentary normal power outages before transfer to the alternate (emergency) power source. Factory set at 3 seconds.
- To retransfer to normal power. Instantaneous retransfer in case of alternate (emergency) power failure. (Factory set at 5 minutes.)
- To allow engine generator cool-down after retransfer to normal source. Factory set at 5 minutes.
Voltage, frequency and phase reversal sensing:
- Voltage sensing on all phases of normal power, set at 85%. A voltage below this value or phase reversal initiates transfer to the alternate (emergency) power source.
- Alternate (emergency) power source voltage and frequency sensing set at 90%. A voltage or frequency above this value initiates transfer to the alternate (emergency) power source.
- Voltage sensing on all phases of normal power, set at 90%. A voltage above this value initiates retransfer to normal power.
